Want to start an exercise regimen but don’t know where to start? Working out for beginners can be easy by keeping a few things in mind. Learn to set a goal, make a plan and follow-through and you’ll be working out like an expert in no time.
Many people want to start working out. Most don’t know where to start and how to keep going. If you are one of these people, we can help you start and maintain a workout regimen by keeping a goal in mind, making a plan and putting the plan into action.
As a beginner, it is important to begin with your goal in mind. Whether you want to lose 10 pounds or just want to get in shape to feel better about yourself, you have to set that objective. Working out would be a lot more fun for beginners who have a purpose and an end in mind. Decide on a measurable goal. It is highly motivating to see that you are slowly approaching your weight goal or start to feel more energized and alive.
Making a plan for working out is the next step. Once you have decided what you want to achieve, write down a plan of action. Do you prefer the indoors or outdoors? Do you work better with others?
Once you have decided on these things, you can choose to go to a gym, workout at home, take up a sport or just go for a run in the park.
Decide on frequency as well. Whether you would like to exercise for a shorter period everyday or longer periods three to four times a week, you have to include that in your plan.
Start small. Don’t start out by doing 100 crunches a day or swimming 50 laps in one go. Chances are you will only exhaust yourself and be disappointed that the results are far from coming. Exercise in small increments. Start running a half a mile a day and gradually move up to 5 miles. The results would be far more satisfying for a beginner who took the time and effort to get there.
Don’t forget to warm up and cool down. This is especially good advice for beginners. After all, your muscles aren’t used to the stress of a constant workout. Make sure you stretch your muscles before and after exercise. You would be glad you did.
Remember to ask the experts. Whatever workout regimen you choose, always defer to the experts. If you’re joining the gym for the first time, ask a qualified physical trainer to instruct you on the proper use of the weights and machines. Read books or articles on running or swimming if you choose to go in that direction. You’re a beginner doing this for the first time. Instructions from someone who has done it for a long time is always helpful.
Eating right always goes together with working out. No matter how many hours you spend at the gym, if you go home and wolf down a burger, fries and cola, you won’t be any nearer to your goal than you were before. Pick foods from all the different food groups. Follow the food pyramid. Load up on carbohydrates, protein and vegetables and minimize the fat. Don’t starve yourself either. It would make you feel entitled to binge eating – which you don’t want.
By setting a goal, making a plan and having the knowledge to get you going, working out won’t be such a daunting task. In a short time, you won’t be calling yourself a workout beginner anymore.
